NCTM Standards 2000

Problem solving is a fundamental process. You can think of it both as a goal and a means for learning math. In order to problem solve effectively students need to understand the math concepts and operations. They also need good computational skills.
Finally, they need to be able to evaluate problem situations and develop skills in mathematical reasoning.
