Connections Among Fields of Study

  • Understand how mathematical ideas
interconnect and build on one and other to produce a coherent whole

NCTM Standards 2000

Students also need to be able to use math in other fields of study.
Many fields of study use mathematics. Examples include: science, social science, economics, the arts, physical fitness, communications and the applied areas of engineering, information technologies, insurance, architecture, medicine, and social research. If students can understand math and use it effectively, they will have gained an important tool for excelling in their field.
